From antiquity they were famous for their thermal springs, which are due to volcanic phenomena. Pausanias’ reference to the “Troiziniaka”, to the eruption of the volcano and the appearance of hot springs with healing properties, at the beginning of the 3rd c.e. Archaeological finds prove that the area has been inhabited since prehistoric times. In ancient times, the peninsula belonged to the region of Trizinia, which was captured by the Athenians in 425 BC. Their name is due to methane, which is associated with thermal waters and volcanic activity in the area.
