RAFINA, GREECE

The Town of Rafina

On the north east side of Attica peninsula and close to the International Airport of Athens lies the beautiful seaside town of Rafina. With small block of flat expanding around the bay, Rafina is a relaxing resort away from the noisy crowds of central Athens. Rafina is also an important port serving ferries to the neighboring island of Evia and some of the Cycladic islands like Mykonos, Paros, Naxos, Syros and Santorini. Rafina is the perfect place to start (or finish) an island-hopping holiday.

The name of Rafina comes from its first governor and the mythical hero of Attica, Araphinas. Inhabited from the prehistoric years, it was one of the 100 municipalities of Athens that Cleisthenes appointed. The area developed mainly after 1922, when refugees from Asia Minor settled there. In recent years, the port has developed importantly and is the second largest port of Attica after Piraeus.
